NEW ROOFING LAW WILL PROTECT VULNERABLE HOMEOWNERS

NEW ROOFING LAW WILL PROTECT VULNERABLE HOMEOWNERS

Date Published: April 3rd, 2014

Tim Leeper Roofing is a locally owned and operated business that has served the Nashville area for nearly 10 years.

His company works primarily with residential clients and homeowners, and that’s by choice. He has been in the roofing industry for more than 18 years, and he’s been in the Nashville area all of his life. He says, “I started out working with some large commercial companies, but after a while I realized that I really enjoyed doing residential work for homeowners.” In a recent article, Leeper discussed the growth of his local business in the Nashville Business Journal.

Tim feels a connection with the people of the Nashville area, he says, “We’ve always been in Middle Tennessee. All our family is here, and this is just where our roots are.” There’s a level of responsibility there, and it’s something Tim does not take lightly.

On the Tim Leeper Roofing Company Blog, he answers real questions and offers helpful tips and solid advice. Of customer service he says, “Anytime we have a question, or a problem to solve, I ask our guys, ‘If this was your grandmother, who lived in another state, and you couldn’t do her roof, how would you like that person to take care of her?’”

When bad weather causes roof damage, Tim’s dedication to his community reaches a new height. Unlicensed and uninsured contractors often chase storms and take advantage of storm victims. “When storms come through and hit,” he says, “that’s when they come out of the woodwork.”

“This kind of fraud is more common than you might think,” continues Leeper, “but until it happens to your aunt, or to a family member, or a friend in your church, you can’t really appreciate how big a deal it really is.”

The State of Tennessee now requires any contractor who meets with an insurance adjuster on behalf of a consumer be a licensed public adjuster, having gone through the accreditation process. According to Leeper, the New Tennessee Roofing Law—written to protect homeowners—has a lot of holes. Out-of-state adjusters can select contractors as they see fit. But on the other hand, says Leeper, “At least we’ve got something in place for the good adjusters who want to come in and make sure that people are not taken advantage of. They can apply that law as they see fit.”
